  • General concepts 1)

    • A classification family comprises a number of classifications, which are related from a certain point of view. The family may be based, for instance, on a common classification variable (e.g. economic activity) or on a common type of object/unit.
      • Example: A classification family is based on a common classification variable – on economic activity and the results of this activity, which are products or services.
    • Classification describes the ensemble of one or several consecutive classification versions. It is a „name” which serves as an umbrella for the classification version(s).
      • Example: Statistical Classification of Economic Activities is a classification. It is the umbrella for OKEČ Rev. 1.1 (2003) and SK NACE Rev. 2 (2008) versions.
    • A classification version is a list of mutually exclusive categories. If the version is hierarchical, it comprises levels. Each level in the hierarchy is a set of mutually exclusive categories. An actual version is a version, which is currently valid. A new version of
a classification differs in essential ways from the previous version. Essential changes are the changes that alter the borders between categories, i.e. a statistical object/unit may belong to different categories in the new and the older version. Border changes may be caused by creating or deleting categories, or moving a part of a category to another. The changes in explanatory notes or in the titles do not lead to a new version.
      • Example: OKEČ Rev 1.1 (2003) and SK NACE Rev. 2 (2008) are consecutive versions. Statistical Classification of Economic Activities serves as the umbrella for these classification versions.
OKEČ Rev 1.1 (2003) is the predecessor version to SK NACE Rev. 2. (2008) Into reverse, SK NACE Rev. 2 (2008) is the successor version to OKEČ Rev. 1.1 (2003). SK NACE Rev. 2 (2008) has been the actual version since 1. 1. 2008.
    • A classification variant is based on a classification version. In a variant, the categories of the classification version are split, aggregated or regrouped to provide additions or alternatives to the standard structure of the base version.
      • Example: Aggregation of divisions SNA/ISIC-NACE Rev.2 is a variant to SK NACE Rev. 2.
  • Navigation

Main menu, graphical symbols + (-) and underlined text, on which cursor focuses (hyperlinks), helps to navigate in the database.
The graphical symbol + (-) expands (collapses) the content of an element, e.g. a family expands down to all the levels of versions; a version expands from the highest level to the lowest level.
Data on identification, subject of classifying, introduction of classification, legal basis, contact person etc. are stored under the „Classification” element. Items of all the version levels are located under the „Version” element. The items, which belong to the specific level, are located under the elements beginning with „Level 1” up to „Level n”.
New explorer window with detailed information of the actual row opens by clicking on the underlined text. Identification and information data relating to the selected element - classification, version or item are shown in the introductory table.
Graphical symbol + (-) located in the heading of the central frame expands (collapses) all the elements.
Lists of families, classifications, versions, correspondences and documents are sorted by title in ascending order.

  • Search ... panel

„Search ... panel” and his options lie on the right hand side on the top. Search panel serves for entry of a string for searching. The options determine an extent of viewed information. If they are selected, they define, that the area of searching are codes and titles of version items or explanatory notes. System searches whole area, if there was not selected any option.
Searching used from the main page runs above all the versions. If searching is used from the window with selected version, it runs above the extent of this version. Searched records are displayed in a new window. Searched string is in bold and has a different colour.
The size of alphabetic character is not differentiated during a searching; there is the compliance for particular alphabetic character, whether it is capital or small letter. System takes into account diacritics, and searches the exact occurrence of word.
Graphical symbols + (-) and underlined text may be used to expand a search result.

    • Example: Compliance for string „product” are strings „product” and „Product”.
  • Explanatory notes

Explanatory notes describe and clarify the contents of the version item. Explanatory notes are structured, and consist of four parts. Part „Includes” specifies the contents of the item in detail. Part „Also include” contains a list of borderline cases, which belong to the described category. Cases, which do not obviously fit into one category, are in a part „Excludes”. Excluded cases may contain a reference to the classification items to which the excluded cases belong. Part „General description” serves for the items of the higher levels, its content relates to all the items standing on the lower levels of hierarchy.
Explanatory notes are usually worked up for the items of the lowest classification level. However they may exist on the highest levels, especially if it is a general description.

  • Correspondences

A correspondence table expresses the relationship between different versions or variants of the same classification or between versions or variants of different classifications. In the first case the correspondence table links two versions or variants of a classification to facilitate comparability over time. In the second instance it expresses the relationship between different classifications. Correspondences are bi-directional.

  • Documents

Documents are text files ready for printing. They are valid to release date, which is linked to them. In difference from documents, database is continuous updated.

  • Language

There is a possibility to choose Slovak and English languages. Explanatory notes and some national classifications are available only in Slovak.

  • Example of searching

„How to find Statistical classification of economic activities SK NACE Rev. 2 (2008)”

    • 1st example

Choose the option „Classification Versions” from the main menu. The list of version titles of various classifications, which are sorted in ascending order, is being displayed. Find row, which contains the title and identification of the version „SK NACE Rev. 2” you are interested in. Move the mouse pointer over the row, which you have chosen, and click on the title. You will get collapsed tree with items of the selected version. The highest level is being displayed.
If you want to expand the whole tree, click on graphical symbol + in the heading of the central frame. If you wish to expand/collapse an element of tree, click on the graphical symbol + (-) of this element. If you wish to see explanatory notes of selected item, click on the title of
      the item.
If you wish to get specific item or several related items, enter a searched string (substring), or a code in the „Search …” panel, which lies on the right hand side on the top; click on both options of the panel. You will get all the items including explanatory notes in the search results view, if they are in compliance with the exact occurrence of the string.

    • 2st example

Choose the option „Families” from the main menu. The list of family titles, which are sorted in ascending order, is being displayed. Click on graphical symbol + in the heading of the central frame. The whole tree of families, classifications, versions and levels is being displayed. If you click on symbol + near the particular „family”, the whole tree of versions and versions levels of this family is being displayed. To localize a classification version, you may use searching tools of your web browser. Enter string ”activ”, which is a part of the title of classification of economic activities. If you gain the row with the title of chosen classification, specifically the row with ”Version: Statistical Classification of Economic Activities, Rev. 2 (2008)”, click on. You will see a collapsed tree, and the highest level of the version is being displayed. You may further continue like in the 1st example.

STAKLAS represents the database for statistical classifications, which is centrally administrated by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic and are obligatorily used by all state authorities and reporting units performing statistical surveys.

This page provides users with a possibility to choose classification versions or related correspondance tables, view their content, and download for local use in several formats.

Navigation within STAKLAS is based on the continuous expansion of hierarchical structure, where the highest hierarchy element is the classification family and on the next levels are classifications, classification versions, and classification levels.
